The Warp and the Weft

The Warp and the Weft is a game where the player designs and manufactures tartan for various ghostly customers coming from different eras of Scottish history. The customer's tastes are influenced by the era that they come from and will order a garment accordingly. The player can experience crafting the dye, weaving the tartan and tailoring the
garment through three fast and intuitive minigames for all ages.

The brief that we were given was Tartan by the V&A Dundee.  The V&A Dundee is an international design museum located on the shores of Dundee.  Their upcoming exhibition, Tartan, was to form the main source of stimulus for our project. The exhibits' major themes and content were to be included and shape the concept.

We took inspiration from games that have minigames as their core mechanic to drive the gameplay and narrative. Similar games are Overcooked, Spiritfarer, Cooking Mama, Warioware and Florence. Influence and guidance have been taken from Jonathan Faier's 2008 book Tartan. The game aims to educate players on the methods of producing tartan while providing a fun and engaging experience. Through development, we seek to expand on themes already introduced by the exhibition namely the innovation and production of tartan and the question of identity and
what it means.
